In short

Vans and people movers go on the tilt tray like a large car, once we know the roof height and what’s inside. SA Best Towing moves HiAces, Sprinters, Transits, delivery vans and eight-seaters around Adelaide, and a second van can travel behind on the rear lift. Phone 0457 300 057 with the roof type.

A high-roof van with a crushed front end

The big white high-roof van on this tray took a hit to the front. The bumper’s gone, the headlight’s smashed and the bonnet has folded up at one corner. Its roof sits well above the headboard. Behind, a small white panel van rides the rear lift with its back end raised, in the yard of an industrial estate. With a roof that tall on board, overhead clearance matters, from power lines at the pickup to trees along the route.

How vans and people movers go onto the tray

The tray tilts until its tail touches the road. Here’s the order it goes in for vans and people movers.

  1. Get the roof height on the phone

A high-roof van already stands tall. Add the deck height under it, plus a roof rack, ladders or a beacon, and the total can get close to the legal limit. Give us the model and roof type when you call so we can plan before the truck leaves Angle Park.

  2. Check what’s inside

Stock, tools and shelving add weight at the back of a van and can slide forward as the tray tilts. We ask you to secure or unload anything loose, then the driver places the van so the heavy end sits toward the headboard.

  3. Mind the rear overhang

Long-wheelbase vans carry plenty of body behind the rear wheels. As the van climbs the tilted tray, that overhang swings down toward the road, so the driver watches the rear bumper and tow bar until the van levels out.

  4. Pick which van takes the tray

On a two-van job, the van with crash damage, a locked gearbox or a drivetrain that mustn’t turn goes on the tray. The rear lift raises one end of the other van, which rolls behind on its other axle. The driver picks which end to lift.

What the driver watches for

Sliding doors and rear barn doors

A sliding door that has come off its track, or rear doors held with rope, can swing open on the road. Tape or tie a damaged door shut before the truck arrives, or tell us about it when you call.

Deep bumpers on people movers

Some people movers wear deep front bumpers and skirts that sit closer to the road than they look. They come up the tray a little at a time, with the driver watching the gap at the front.

Trackers and immobilisers on fleet vans

Plenty of fleet vans carry GPS trackers and immobilisers. Let your fleet manager know we’re moving the van, so nobody reports it stolen when the tracker shows it heading down South Road.

What changes the price

Every job is priced on the phone before it’s booked. These are the things that move the number.

  • Distance from Angle Park to the van and on to the drop-off
  • Roof height and length, if the van needs a different route or extra care
  • Load inside the van, and time spent securing or unloading it
  • Crash damage, jammed doors or a gearbox stuck in Park
  • A second van on the rear lift in the same trip

Questions about vans and people movers

Answers to common questions. If yours isn’t here, ring and ask.

Can you tow a high-roof Sprinter or Transit?

The tray carries high-roof vans such as the Sprinter, Transit and Crafter. Tell us the total height with racks, ladders or beacons on top, since something may need to come off first. Give us the model and roof type and we’ll confirm before booking.

Do you tow people movers like the Tarago?

Taragos, Carnivals, Odysseys and other eight-seaters go on the tilt tray like a large car. Before we arrive, check the third row and the boot for bags, scooters and lunchboxes, and take out any child seats you need while it’s away.

Can I leave stock or tools in the van while it’s towed?

Yes, if it’s secured and you’re happy for it to travel. Stock on shelving or tied to the walls can stay. Loose boxes, gas bottles and anything that could slide into the seats should come out or get strapped down.

Can you tow a campervan conversion?

We can move van-based conversions that fit the tray, like HiAce, Sprinter, Transit and Crafter campers with a pop top or high roof. Tell us about water tanks and gas bottles on board. Before loading, close and latch the pop top, turn the gas off at the bottle and secure the fridge and cupboard doors.

Can you tow a refrigerated van?

We can if it fits the tray. The fridge unit on the roof or above the cab adds height, so include it when you give us the total. The fridge won’t run off the van’s engine while it’s on the tray, so move chilled stock to another vehicle if the trip or the repair will take a while.

What should a business set up before a work van breaks down?

Give each driver the towing number, the van’s make, model and roof type, and the address of the workshop you use, so one call covers it. Decide who can say yes to the price, because SA Best Towing gives it on the phone and books the job once someone agrees. If the van carries stock or tools, the driver should say what’s on board and whether it’s tied down.
