Tractor transport in Adelaide

A tractor can’t drive itself across town to the mechanic, and an old grey Fergie bought for restoration may not run at all. We carry both on our tilt tray, from backyard sheds across Adelaide and from farms out in the country.

In short

Most compact, utility and vintage tractors fit a tilt tray. The driver takes a running tractor up the tray or winches a dead one on, then chains it at both axles. SA Best Towing carries them from its Angle Park yard to farms, sheds and shows around Adelaide and in the country. Broadacre tractors need a low loader.

What we move

  • Orchard and vineyard tractors
  • Vintage Fergusons and Fordsons
  • Restoration projects that don’t run
  • Rally and show tractors
  • Ride-on mowers and small garden tractors
  • Slashers and rotary hoes

A little grey tractor and its rusty rims

An old Ferguson-style tractor sits on the tray with its bonnet to the headboard, the grey paint worn and the rear rims brown with rust. A green implement rests on the deck behind it. The truck stands on a gravel drive under gum trees, with a house tucked into the garden beside it. A chain runs from the front axle down to the deck.

How tractors go onto the tray

The tray tilts until its tail touches the road. Here’s the order it goes in for tractors.

  1. Make, model and what’s on the back

Tell us the make and model, whether it has a cab or a rollover frame, and what’s on the three-point linkage. A loader, a slasher or a rotary hoe changes the weight and the length. With that, we know whether it fits before the truck leaves the yard.

  2. Driven on or winched up

We drive a running tractor up the tilted tray at a crawl ourselves, because customers don’t drive anything onto the tray. A dead one comes up on the winch, hooked to the drawbar or front frame.

  3. Chains at both axles

We chain the front axle and the rear drawbar or axle housing to the deck, tension the chains, and lower the tray. An implement either stays on the linkage, lowered and tied, or travels on the deck with its own strap or chain.

  4. Cab and exhaust height

Give us the height to the top of the cab, the exhaust stack or any beacon when you call, so we can tell you whether it fits.

What the driver watches for

Old tyres and rusted rims

Vintage tractors often sit on perished rear tyres and rims that have rusted thin. Mention either when you call so the driver can plan the load.

Oil and diesel on the deck

Old tractors weep oil and diesel. Turn the fuel tap off before we arrive, and tell us if it’s leaking.

Loose tin on a restoration

On a project tractor, the bonnet, mudguards and seat may be held on by rust. Take off or tie down anything loose before the truck arrives, or tell us about it.

What changes the price

Every job is priced on the phone before it’s booked. These are the things that move the number.

  • Distance from Angle Park to the pick-up and drop-off
  • Whether the tractor drives on or has to be winched up dead
  • Implements, loaders and attachments travelling with it
  • Soft paddocks, tight sheds and narrow farm gates
  • Time on site getting a seized tractor moving

Questions about tractors

Answers to common questions. If yours isn’t here, ring and ask.

Can a tilt tray carry a tractor?

It can carry plenty of them. Our Hino has carried a New Holland with a cab, a little grey Ferguson-style tractor and a red vintage tractor, all pictured on this page. Big broadacre tractors need a low loader. Give us the make and model and we’ll tell you which side of the line yours sits on.

Can you move a tractor that doesn’t run?

Yes. The winch draws a dead tractor up the tray slowly, hooked to the drawbar or the front frame. If the brakes or gearbox have seized, tell us. A locked wheel means planning the load first, and freeing a seized tractor takes extra time, which changes the price.

Do you transport tractors to rallies and shows?

We carry vintage and restored tractors to rallies and shows around Adelaide, and bring them home afterwards. Book ahead for show weekends, pass on the gate and arrival time from the organisers, and tell us where the tractor needs to sit when it comes off.

Do you pick up tractors from farms outside Adelaide?

We do, because we take country jobs as well as work around Adelaide. Tell us the property address, the gate, and how far the tractor sits from a firm track. A tilt tray needs firm, level ground to load, so a wet paddock may mean waiting a day. The longer run costs more, and you hear the price before you book.

Can you move a tractor with the implement still on?

If the tray has the room, it can stay on. A slasher or rotary hoe on the three-point linkage adds length and weight, so tell us the make and width. Otherwise the implement travels on the deck as a separate piece, the way the red vintage tractor pictured on this page has a green implement strapped behind it.

Can you collect a tractor bought at a clearing sale?

Clearing sale buys need to leave the property by a set date, and plenty of them don’t run, so we work out a pick-up day with you. Send us the lot number, the address, the pick-up window and a photo of the tractor. A sale out in the country is fine, and the distance goes into the price.
