In short

Electric slab scissor lifts and smaller units travel on a tilt tray with the platform stowed. The driver takes a charged one up at creep speed or winches a flat one, then chains it down. SA Best Towing does this from its Angle Park yard in Adelaide. Call 0457 300 057 with the model number.

Two toilets and a hand-wash unit, strapped one by one

Two red and grey portable toilets stand upright on the tray, side by side, with a hand-wash unit up against the headboard. Each toilet has its own blue ratchet strap running from the top down to the tray rail, and the hand-wash unit has a yellow strap of its own. The truck waits in a yard next to a parked boom lift.

How scissor lifts and site equipment go onto the tray

The tray tilts until its tail touches the road. Here’s the order it goes in for scissor lifts and site equipment.

  1. Model number first

The model number tells us a scissor lift’s weight and stowed height. On the JLG in our photo, 3246E2 is printed on the platform guard at the top. Read yours off the guard or the serial plate and we’ll tell you on the phone whether it suits the tray.

  2. Platform stowed, up at creep speed

With the platform stowed, we drive a charged scissor lift up the tilted tray at creep speed ourselves. Slab scissors sit low on small solid wheels, so the angle where the tray meets the ground matters.

  3. Winched if the battery’s flat

A scissor lift with a flat battery or a fault comes up on the winch, hooked to the chassis tie-down points, with the brakes let off through the manual release if the machine has one.

  4. Chained at the tie-down lugs

Chains go through the maker’s tie-down lugs at each corner, clear of the platform rails and the scissor arms. Toilets and lighter gear get ratchet straps instead.

What the driver watches for

Guardrails and height

The guardrails on top of a slab scissor stand above the roof of our cab once the lift is on the tray. Some models fold their rails down. If yours does, fold them before we arrive.

Empty the toilets first

We carry portable toilets once they’ve been pumped out. A full tank sloshes on corners and can spill onto the road. Book the pump-out truck first, then call us.

Hire return times

Hire depots take returns at set times. Give us the hire number and the cut-off when you book, and ask on the phone whether the truck can make that window.

What changes the price

Every job is priced on the phone before it’s booked. These are the things that move the number.

  • Distance between sites, depots and hire yards, starting from Angle Park
  • Machine weight and stowed height from the model number
  • A scissor lift that won’t drive and needs winching
  • Number of units, toilets or pieces on one load
  • Site access, inductions and waiting at the gate
“The driver arrived quickly and was very professional and friendly. He handled my vehicle with care and explained everything clearly. The whole process was smooth, and I really appreciated how helpful and reassuring he was during a stressful situation.”

Questions about scissor lifts and site equipment

Answers to common questions. If yours isn’t here, ring and ask.

Can a tilt tray carry a scissor lift?

Yes, for electric slab scissors and smaller units that fit the tray. Our photo shows an orange JLG 3246E2 chained on our Hino with its platform down. The tray carries up to 4 tonnes, and bigger rough-terrain diesel scissors can weigh more than that or run too wide. Give us the model number on 0457 300 057 and we’ll check it for you.

Do portable toilets need to be emptied before transport?

The tank needs pumping out first. A full tank can slop out of the vent under hard braking or on a tight corner, and you don’t want that on the deck or the road. Organise the pump-out, then book us for the move.

Can you return a scissor lift to the hire company for me?

We collect the machine from your site and drop it at the hire depot. Give us the hire contract number, the depot address and its return cut-off. Lower the platform and charge the battery before we arrive, so the depot can check it in straight away.

Can you move a scissor lift that won’t drive?

In most cases the winch can bring it up. Most scissor lifts have a manual brake release for this, and the winch draws the lift up the tray slowly once the brakes are off. If the lift is stuck with the platform partway up, it needs a technician to bring it down before we can carry it.

Can you carry more than one piece of site equipment at once?

Yes, when the weight and space allow. Two portable toilets fit side by side on our tray, and the photo on this page shows that load with a hand-wash unit up front. A scissor lift and a toilet, or a compactor and a generator, can share a trip. Tell us everything that’s going.

Can your driver do a site induction?

Ask when you book. Tell us what the site asks for, such as a sign-in, an induction or PPE, and we’ll tell you on the phone whether the driver can meet it. If the site needs a specific card or ticket, let us know before the day so we can check.
